Technology is transforming parcel shipping operations and the procurement of transportation in the supply chain.
In previous blog posts we shared with you why the Reveel Shipping Intelligence Platform™ and more specifically the ability its advanced data science and modeling capabilities give shippers to optimize their parcel operations, compare contracts and uncover opportunities to save money in real time has not only impacted the hundreds of brands that rely on it, but also the core of our business here at Reveel.
As many of our customers know from our many years of working together, Reveel was first and foremost a shipping consulting firm. Like most, we operated under a gain share model in which we were compensated for the savings we delivered by helping our clients secure more favorable contracts, the shipping protocols and processes we helped develop, and audits of shipping operations – efforts that almost always uncover significant savings.
That experience – living and breathing shipping over many years, not only at Reveel but for many of us at carriers earlier in our careers – was instrumental in creating our platform. But the platform, and the access to data it puts at shippers’ fingers tips, quickly made it clear that shipping intelligence, and the ability it gives shippers to make sense of the complex web of variables and factors that impact what it costs to ship any parcel most effectively, does more than deliver top-line and bottom-line results. It also fundamentally altered our business.
More fundamentally, it negates the need for the gain share model upon which shipping consulting firms have operated for so many years. With fast and easy access to data, powerful modeling and data science in an intuitive user interface, shippers always have a personal shipping consultant at their fingertips – one that enables decisions to be made based on fact each and every time.
Ours of course is not the first industry to see this transformation. Booking a flight on an airline and filing taxes are but two of the many once consulting-intensive tasks that millions of Americans now complete effortlessly with sophisticated applications that draw on today’s powerful machine learning, artificial intelligence and data science.
Gartner® recently unveiled research “How to Digitize and Optimize Transportation Procurement Using Technology.” The transportation industry continues to be in flux with capacity, rates and disruption. Supply chain technology leaders can use this research to identify technologies to streamline and improve their transportation procurement, secure capacity and manage costs.
Reveel is included in the as one of the examples of Transportation Data and Analytics Platforms. The report further state that “The best use of technology consists in helping the procurement people reach a decision, not in making the decision for them.” At Reveel, we couldn’t agree more.
